The Goddess Weighs In

Living Large and Healthy

As if yoga didn’t already have a number of health benefits including greater flexibility, increased strength, and lowered blood pressure (http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/beginnersguide/yogabenefits.asp) it also appears that it will improve your sex life.

Yoga makes us aware of the sensations in our bodies, it helps to keep us rooted and present in the moment, it makes us more flexible and comfortable in our bodies, it boosts energy levels, it helps to strengthen the pelvic floor and it increases blood flow to the pelvis all of which will improve sex.

According to the Gaiam website (http://life.gaiam.com/article/improve-your-sex-life-yoga) a couple of specific poses are especially good:  Upavistha Konasana (Wide-Legged Straddle Pose) and Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose, also known as Cobbler’s Pose)

Upavistha Konasana (Wide-Legged Straddle Pose)

This position is done seated on the floor with your legs spread wide.  The leg muscles should be active and toes and kneecaps pointed towards the ceiling. Without curving the back, lean forward as far as you can comfortably.  Then hold the position for 5 to 10 deep breaths.  Like any yoga pose only stretch as far as you can comfortably do so and each time you exhale fold a little deeper into the pose if you can.

Sexual benefits include increased blood flow (and thus sensation) to the pelvis.

Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose, also known as Cobbler’s Pose)

This position is done seated on the floor with knees bent and soles of the feet touching. Lightly holding the big toes or feet lean forward over your legs allowing your back to be gently rounded. Then hold the position for 5 to 10 deep breaths.  Like any yoga pose only stretch as far as you can comfortably do so and each time you exhale fold a little deeper into the pose if you can.

Sexual benefits include alleviating urinary and uterine disorders.  It strengthens the uterus and eases irritability, anxiety and fatigue.

I often do these poses to stretch out my back, but I had no idea of their added benefits.  Yoga is part of my planned routine to prepare for a future triathlon, but while I’ve been getting to the pool and adding more walking to my days, I must admit that the DVDs are still sitting beside my computer untouched.  Now I have added incentive to dust them off.
