Doing That NaNoWriMo Thing

I’ve been threatening to write a novel for a while and after some false starts I have done it. Well I mean I have started.

I must confess I am figuring out the “Nano” phenomenon as I go since it appears that we are all “winners” which sounds a little quaint to me, but for someone like me who thrives on badges and clicking progress charts this really is up my alley.

I’m not sure what I will have at the end of this month, but I did have a eureka moment a few weeks ago with this story where all the pieces that were floating around in my head, the characters I wanted to include, the scraps of dialogue started to fall into place in a way that finally made perfect sense to me.  I’m not sure if I will share the final piece or if it will ever get published or if anyone will even want to read it when I’m done, but I’ve decided that for now my only concern is to get the words on the page, the rest I will worry about later.

Parkour Is My Passion…Stop Laughing!

I had a dream last night.  I was running a 10K marathon (or whatever you call 10K run) and it was in a mall.  I think Square One.  You had to run routes in the mall and then stop at certain points and do a task or remember the password you’d been given or whatever and then you could run to the next station which might be back or forth or wherever.  I was leaping over flower pots, down stairs, over railings, zigging and zagging around mall displays and all the time I was just on fire. It was a mix of running, Parkour and trivia and I was awesome.  I had no idea I was such a great runner, I just flew.   I didn’t win or anything, but I was a proud fat girl and I could move like smoke.
I know it was a dream, but it didn’t feel like a dream, it felt portentous.
When I watched Casino Royale, the remake with Daniel Craig, I was mesmerized.


I immediately read up on Parkour, it’s origins and its philosophy, but I figured I had to be thin and wiry and all muscle and so I shelved that idea.  And then someone posted a blog post by a woman who is fat and does Parkour.  Now she’s not my size so I need to work a bit on my fitness and strength before I join a Parkour club, but I realized it’s not impossible with some hard work which I’m willing and able to do.  I’m working with a trainer to build muscle and tone, I’m working on my cardio with water running and elliptical and adding in some yoga would help with flexibility.  I’m up for it, I’m pumped, and soon I’ll be climbing tall buildings, or at least ya know taking the stairs two at a time.

Bloom Watch Begins!



In 1959 the citizens of Metropolitan Tokyo gifted 2000  Cherry trees to the citizens of Toronto for accepting re-located Japanese-Canadians after WWII.  Trees were planted in High Park on the hillside which overlooks Grenadier Pond and around the east shore of the pond. Subsequent donations were planted in the same areas and in 1984 a grove of cherry trees was planted in the park.

The trees bloom in the Spring and the public descends to enjoy them.  The trick is that no one knows when the trees will bloom.  In 2012 the peak bloom was an early April 13, last year the peak bloom was May 3.  This year with the winter that just won’t end (it may snow tomorrow) it’s possible that the blooms will be delayed or may not appear at all.

Of course last year I swore that 2014 would be the year I visit the Cherry Blossoms!  I have even started organizing people to join me and make a picnic of it, but wouldn’t you know the blossoms might be late and I will be out of town from mid May until the beginning of June.

Regardless, I’m hopeful that the blossoms will make an appearance before I disappear for a few weeks and I am planning on walking through the park and partaking of a picnic lunch while surrounded by delicate pink blossoms.

If you’re in the Greater Toronto Area, I encourage you to make this year the year you experience the blossoms.  They are stunning in pictures.  I can only imagine what they will be like in person.

On The Twelfth Day Of Christmas. . .

Today is the final day of the twelve days of Christmas and I must say I’m relieved.  I’ve tried to think of activities that relate to the days, but which are also accessible to everyone and this has proven more difficult than I originally imagined.  One of my challenges is to attend a Drum Fit class at the YMCA, and while I was a percussionist in high school and I’m always looking for new forms of fitness to entice me to work out I must admit I really wasn’t sure what a class would look like or how the average person would have access to large drums.   All of my questions were answered when I found these gems on YouTube:

On The Eleventh Day Of Christmas. . .

Piping, piping hot, coffee is piping hot.  I gave my mom a can of Tim Horton’s ground coffee.  If you live in Canada or in certain parts of the U.S. you will know that Tim Horton’s is as iconically Canadian as beavers, maple syrup and toques.   Essentially a doughnut shop they are so popular in Canada that it is hard to go very far without bumping into one.  In fact it is not unusual to find intersections with shops on multiple corners.  More than one person has told me that they have missed friends or meeting because they were at the right intersection, but the wrong Tim’s.

I’m not a fan of coffee or doughnuts so Timmies doesn’t hold a lot of allure for me, but I do smile when I see references to it outside of Canada.  Today being Saturday, and keeping with the piping theme I am going to suggest a cup of green tea.  Well known for its health benefits I try to drink green tea when I can, though I am actually not a fan of any hot beverages.  Sometimes I have it on ice and somewhere I have a recipe for green tea lemonade which is pretty good.

On The Tenth Day Of Christmas. . .

Lords a leaping made me think of Robin Hood:Men In Tights so I gave my mother stockings.

Since most hosiery is not made for humans I think sending you off to find the perfect pair of tights would be cruel so instead I’m going to suggest that you take a “leap” and try something that intimidates or frightens you.  It could be anything like go to an exercise class by yourself for the first time or eat a meal in a restaurant by yourself.  It doesn’t have to be public or elaborate, simply push those boundaries and live a bigger life today.

On The Eighth Day Of Christmas. . .


My true love gave to me eight maids a milking.

For my mom’s eighth gift I gave her hot chocolate.  Milk…milk chocolate…hot chocolate…it’s a stretch, but oh come on let me have it.  This is New Year’s Day.  It is the day of reflection, of resolutions, and of hangovers.  Today try a sport drink and lots of water to help with that last one, but take some time and think about what you want to accomplish this year.  My suggestion is that it is something concrete that you can actually measure.  For example if you want to lose weight that’s admirable, but perhaps think about how you are going to do that or what it means to you.  Perhaps it can be defined by activities for instance you could aim to walk a certain distance without stopping or walk up a flight of stairs without gasping or get a certain number of hours of sleep.  Also take your time when you make your resolution.  Take your time, and set a goal that will challenge you, but not so much that you give up after the first week.  It needs to be challenging, but not near impossible for you to be successful.  I have three goals this year – organizing my home, improving my fitness, and saving money and each one is broken into simpler tasks like clearing out my bedroom closet, being able to walk up two flights of stairs without huffing and puffing and taking my lunch to work.  All will take effort, but they are definitely doable.

On The Seventh Day Of Christmas. . .

My true love gave me seven swans a swimming.

Today my mom and I are going swimming.  She has a pool in her building so you wouldn’t think this would be a huge effort, but my mom is pretty feisty in her desire to not get wet or mess up her hair.  In fact my pushing her to do this one thing for herself led to an argument on Christmas Day, but I gave her a sneak peek of what today’s activity is and she’s actually being a pretty good sport about it.  We’ll see how she feels when she actually gets in the pool, but her willingness is a positive step and I’m going to grab this opportunity to get her in the pool.

The benefits of swimming are many. It is the best exercise for pretty much anyone because it helps take weight off of joints,  helps to loosen tight muscles and if the pool is on the warm side it will help to soothe her arthritis.  It also improves muscle strength and tone and helps to improve bone strength especially in post menopausal women.  As an aerobic exercise it keeps the heart healthy, burns an impressive number of calories, strengthens lung capacity, and reduces cholesterol, lowers risk of diabetes, and helps one to relax and de-stress.  

If you have access to water then I suggest celebrating today with a swim.

On The Sixth Day Of Christmas. . .

My true love supposedly gave to me six geese a laying.



For my mom I went for the play on words and since restaurants lay a nice table I am taking her out for lunch and some mother daughter chatting.  After all the eating over the holidays I think a better idea would be to lay about and meditate.  New Year’s Eve is Tuesday and if you’re pondering making a resolution then perhaps give yourself some quiet and some time to evaluate what your health goals are and how best you can accomplish them in 2014.
